Patients commonly relate the severity of pain as an emergency and for any person suffering debilitating pain it is an emergency. Medical and dental emergencies relate to a condition which if untreated can quickly worsen the outcome of treatment. These can occur with TMD patients.

Severe debilitating head pain of Sudden Onset can indicate pathology other than TMD and may require medical evaluation as soon as possible. This means a patient who has not had a history of head pain who is suddenly stricken with severe head pain requires medical evaluation even if they are already aware that they have a TMJ condition. This is also true after a major trauma such as a motor vehicle accident. Comprehensive medical evaluation is the first thing that should occur. Only after the patient has had such an evaluation should they seek evaluation for TMJ injuries.
